CALL BEFORE YOU DIG!

Call North Dakota One Call at 1-800-795-0555 or 811 to make sure that you don't run into any underground utilities. If you have any questions regarding the One Call procedure, or need information before making the call, you may call the City Engineer's office at (701) 662-7600, ext. 226.

Lemna Wastewater Treatment Facility

Our Lemna Wastewater Treatment Facility is the only one in North Dakota and it is the second largest in the World at a total of 58 acres. It is an all natural treatment system, no chemicals are used. It relies on the growth of duckweed to remove the contaminants.

Civil Engineer Viet Ngo and the Lemna Corporation designed the water treatment facility in 1990. The project can be described as both a cost-effective way to clean water and a large-scale environmental artwork. A series of holding ponds and serpentine channels spread over 58 acres looks something like a huge hieroglyph; the design is best viewed from the sky. The project's design won international recognition and awards.

What to do if sewer backs up into your home

While we all hope this never occurs, on occasion it does. Possible sewer problems may be caused by tree roots, which grow into the line and eventually block it. It is the property owner's responsibility to keep their service line clean. Anyone experiencing a sanitary sewer backup they believe is a result of the City's sanitary sewer system should immediately contact the Public Utilities Department at (701) 662-7623. If the backup occurs on the weekend or between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. during the week, we ask that you call our emergency on-call cell phone at (701)351-0209.

Sump Pump Hoses

Residents are reminded that the City has an ordinance that requires sump pump hoses be run outside into the yard or into the gutter and must not obstruct foot traffic on a sidewalk. The only exception to this ordinance is the winter months when hoses would freeze up outside. During those months, sump pumps may be discharged into the sanitary sewer system. Violations are punishable by a $500 fine.

Check Your Storm Drain After A Heavy Rainfall

Check the storm water grates or catch basins along your street and on the corners of the intersections. If the drains are filled with leaves, branches, and other debris, the water won't flow freely into the storm sewer system and may cause overland flooding. City crews clean storm water grates and catch basins after significant rainfalls, but if you see a drain filled with debris, removing the debris will help prevent water backing up over the curb and into your yard before City crews arrive.
